Nicholas Thompson grew up in Farmingdale, NY, a suburban town on Long Island. Kelly Jenkins grew up in Colts Neck, New Jersey, and coincidentally went to school in Farmingdale, NJ. It was during graduate school at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) that they met for the first time, at an “unofficial” student government bar crawl that Nick helped organize. They met each other again after the Graduate Student Wine and Cheese Night (that Nick also helped set up) and started dating. What really sealed the deal was that Kelly and Nick both ski and both of their parents have houses in southern Vermont! They could have even been on the same chairlift at Mount Snow before! Within a few months, they were on the slopes together (sometimes Kelly would snowboard, which is ok I guess) and before long, they were meeting friends and family. In July of 2017, Nick defended his thesis and got a job offer to work at Los Alamos National Laboratory out in New Mexico, but Kelly was still working on finishing her degree. Kelly and Nick decided to stay together and made the long distance relationship work. They made a road trip out to Los Alamos together, and flew back and forth almost every month to see each other. Kelly defended her thesis in March, 2018, and in May, they both walked together at graduation. Due to planning, opportunity, and a lot of luck, Kelly and Nick ended up both getting jobs in Paris, France and moved to Paris together. The next year was a huge adventure – they traveled all over the world to places like Dublin, London, Amsterdam, Rome, Seville, Bordeaux, Chamonix, St. Louis (MO), and Estes Park (CO). On December 27th, 2018, after three years of dating, with both their parents in attendance, Nick finally popped the question, and Kelly said yes!
